Truth In Reporting All The Time! Fair & Balanced Reporting!

NEWS UPDATE...Teresa Younger, CCLU Executive Director, appeared on USA TV Talk Live

with Al Bruhn July 22 on Comcast TV 23 to talk about the Patriot Act and its negative

impact on American citizens.

Other issues included freedom of speech on college campus,

freedom of art expression and Hartford's public education problems.

This program, which was a third in a three part series on legal issues affecting citizens,

will be rebroadcast on Comcast TV 23 and Charter TV 21. Check here for updates.

(Danbury, Connecticut)...Teresa Younger, Executive Director of Connecticut Civil Liberties Union,

warned viewers of USA TV Talk Live with Al Bruhn on Comcast TV 23 March 18, 2003,

that the USA Patriot Act

is to be considered an invasion of private property and threatens the

United States Constitutional rights of all American citizens, especially now in light of US military

action against Iraq.

The FBI can enter peoples' homes without owners' consent or

knowledge and take personal computers among other personal items according to Teresa Younger, who

characterized the current state of affairs governing the USA Patriot Act

that passed with little or no significant political

debate on Capitol Hill. The ACLU along with the CCLU is trying to challenge the USA Patriot

Act, as it imperils citizen rights to privacy.

Teresa Younger likened the USA Patriot Act to the McCarthy era

during the 1950's, when people were indiscriminately accused of being communists.

Regarding the Sheff versus O'Neill case, Teresa Younger stated that there are

good magnet schools in Hartford area, where parents are clamoring to get their kids

enrolled. Teresa Younger claims there has been progress with the Sheff versus O'Neill

case, and that minority students will be provided equality education which was the charge

when the case started many years ago.

Sheff represents an Afro-American boy who now is a father to a son, and O'Neill is a

former Connecticut governor now deceased.

Teresa Younger expects the Sheff versus O'Neill case to end in the near future.

On the issue of pursing a lawsuit against a public school principal for not providing a

good education for a student, Teresa Younger emphasized that parents must pursue all

possible avenues of corrective measures regarding a child's education program before initiating a lawsuit.

However, the CCLU will offer guidance to parents who want to sue their child's school

principal over a failed education program.

Although private schools don't have to follow public education standards, Teresa Younger

warned that a public school voucher will not financially help parents who seek a private

school for his or her child after the state claims a public school has failed where the child

is attending. And, a private school doesn't have to accept all students who seek

admissions into their establishment. Plus, parents of a state noted failed public school

won't have the extra money to pay the private school tuition, Teresa Younger explained.

Al Bruhn, a noted education investigative reporter, stated that although he supports

President Bush's No Child Left Behind act, which might allow Connecticut taxpayers to underwrite

a voucher for a parent to transfer a child from a failing public school to a private school,

he's against tax dollars being spent on a poor private school which has questionable standards.

Al Bruhn was on assignment at a private school where there were questionable education practices,

including no language arts curriculum, no code of behavior and stereotyping of student grading.

The private school principal told Al Bruhn that public school teachers just have to prevent kids

from killing one another, although he retracted that statement immediately after being stated.

But, it's that kind of mindset and misadministration that places private schools at odds for

public monies regarding federal legislation No Child Left Behind.

And, a parent of a child at the private school reported to Al Bruhn that her child was removed

from the questionable school because of racial discrimination.
