BRUHN DOMINATES MATHERS

(Patterson, New York)...Age has no boundaries was demonstrated in one of the most unusual BJJ grappling matches at a USA Kickboxing Association sanctioned event in the Patterson, New York Parks & Recreation Center April 18, 2009. 63 year old Al Bruhn turned the tide on opponent 20 year old Tyler Mathers in the ring during the first scheduled bout before standing room only arena. Mathers shot for a takedown at the beginning of the 5 min. match and attempted a rear naked choke which Bruhn countered with a reversal and getting into Mathers' guard. It was an intense battle with Bruhn commanding the later half of the match.

When the bell sounded, referee Ryan Quinn raised Bruhn and Mathers hands as first place winners with each awarded a trophy. Each grappler had his corner coaches and Bruhn was coached by head coach/trainer Kyle Quine. Quine praised Bruhn for his grappling performance who noted that Kyle is the real winner for turning his training program into a successful 5 year medical book project MMA & Healthy Heart For All Ages. Another 5 year medical book project How To Prevent A Heart Attack:Cardio Wrestling is slated for publication in the near future. Bruhn, a former cardiac rehab patient, is NAGA (North American Grappling Association) Ranked # 1 in USA, Connecticut and New England in the Executive Division. Click here to see Bruhn vs. Mathers

Al Bruhn vs. Tyler Mathers

Al Bruhn

Tyler Mathers
(Patterson, New York)...The winner of the most outstanding match of the century will be determined at the Parks and Recreation Center here in town when the USA Kickboxing Association sanctions a No-Gi event between 20 year old Tyler Mathers and 63 year old Al Bruhn. WAIT! No joking! This match is scheduled for 5 minutes and winner is determined by tapout only!

Yes, it's an exhibition match but who's keeping score?

The referee can only hold up the hand of the winner of the grappler who forces his opponent to tapout.

Now, word is that Al Bruhn forced one of his opponents to tapout during a recent NAGA event April 4, 2009 at Essex County College in Newark, New Jersey with a guillotine. And, that was in the Executive Beginner Division 50 years and older.

How will a young grappler do with a senior citizen?

Kyle Quine will keep a close eye on the controversial match which will take place in a boxing ring.

Quine, Al Bruhn's head trainer/coach, is preparing his grappler to win and win big time. Yes, Quine and Bruhn tied for first place during a grappling match October 4, 2008 at same site of scheduled Bruhn vs. Tyler Mathers.

NAGA WIN/POWERWALKING/INTERNATIONAL FAVORS DOMINATE AL BRUHN'S DAILY LIFE!

In a 3-way way race for a gold medal in the 2009 NAGA World Championship 50 year old plus beginner executive No-Gi grappling division (North American Grappling Association) at Essex County College in Newark, New Jersey April 4, 2009, 63 year old Al Bruhn won his first match forcing an opponent to tapout in a Guillotine, but then lost his second match by points giving Al a silver medal. It was Al Bruhn's 7th NAGA tournament since he started competing in no-gi grappling 2007. Al Bruhn choked-up while hugging Kyle Quine following his unusual tapout win. Kyle Quine has remarkably turned around the training program for Al Bruhn to succeed in tournaments. Kyle Quine was quick to call a foul on the part of Al Bruhn's second match opponent, a New York Wall Street attorney George Sommers, which was officially acknowledged. To date, Al Bruhn has earned 6 silver medals and 1 bronze medal in NAGA tournaments, an unprecedented medical accomplishment, given fact that Al Bruhn, a former cardiac rehab patient is NAGA Ranked number one in CT/New England/USA in his age division.

Al Bruhn weighed-in at 190.5 for the April 4, 2009 NAGA tournament after loosing 10 pounds in a few weeks while recovering from a hamstring problem, which was cared for by Kyle Quine, head coach/trainer, WCSU Wrestling/Grappling Team.

After NAGA April 4, 2009 tournament and back at hotel, Al and Kyle celebrated Al's first remarkable tapout victory with a bottle of champagne and then headed to Penn Station in NYC where they power walked for dozens of city blocks into China Town and a stay at a famous Vietnamese restaurant and afterwards to a nearby Little Italy pub for a few beers before heading back to the Wyndham Hotel at Newark International Airport. It was all part of a day's work in the life of Al Bruhn, who now is preparing for a match against a 20 year old grappler in a USAKickboxing Association event at Patterson, New York Parks & Recreation Center April 18, 2009.

Diet management, weightlifting and cardio exercising in addition to grappling technique training will all be on the radar screen for Al Bruhn during the next three weeks leading into the NAGA event. Eating only fruits, veggies and protein and plenty of water, running up to 6 miles per hour on treadmill, 75% upper body weightlifting/25% lower body weightlifting plus incorporating wrestling takedown techniques is the new revised training program for Al Bruhn under head trainer Kyle Quine. "Never give up is my motto," Bruhn said. "If at first you don't succeed, try again," Bruhn added. Bruhn's silver medals is not the end only the beginning to gold and championship belt.

TOP RANKED AL BRUHN TO RECEIVE NATIONAL RECOGNITION

Medical history is in the making with a former cardiac rehab patient defying all the odds against him and living a healthy life on the mat.

63 year old Al Bruhn under head trainer Kyle Quine of Western Connecticut State University Wrestling/Grappling Team won a bronze medal in the Executive Division during the 2009 North American Grappling Association New England Grappgling Championship on Saint Valentine's Day at the Twin River Casino in Lincoln, Rhode Island. Bruhn holds five silver NAGA medals and is ranked number one in Connecticut/New England and number 8 for USA in 2008. Bruhn who is NAGA Ranked in the top 15 nationally in the 50plus age category, will receive a NAGA Ranked certificate signifying his achievement and featured in Gladiator Magazine (www.gladmag.com) and on the NAGA website (www.nagafighter.com).

How To Prevent A Heart Attack:Cardio Wrestling is slated for publication in the near future, which details Al Bruhn's first heart attack in summer 2003 while on a family vacation in southern California to his NAGA 2008 achievements.

(Lincoln, Rhode Island)...Saint Valentine's Day attracted hundreds of grapplers with their families and friends to the Twin River Casino in Lincoln, Rhode Island for the 2009 NAGA New England Grappgling Championship. 245 divisions including all age groups participated during the event that had standing room only within the stadium. Kipp Kolar, president of North American Grappling Association, held a pep talk before the grappling matches took place and in addition to explaining the dos and don'ts, he stressed the need for grapplers and parents to be more patient and cordial during matches. If participants can't follow the rules, they will be evicted from NAGA grappling according to Kipp Kolar.

NAGA has been on the sports scene for more than a dozen years and the intensity of the sport has increased dramatically during recent years due to UFC on cable TV among other martial arts venues. There has been harsh criticism of kids participating in mixed martial arts including boxing, kickboxing and grappling among spectators of the sport. But, NAGA president Kipp Kolar is careful to empasize the fact that all measures are pursed by his staff to help grapplers on the mat have a safe bout.

While there is a handful of grapplers who are intent on hurting their opponents according to Kipp Kolar, there are many grapplers who enjoy the sports for multiple reasons. But, at the end of the day, grapplers today are far more educated about techniques and conditioning and bring to the mat a new day of tough and sometimes unpleasant feelings by opponents.

One of the major concerns of NAGA officials is sandbagging, a strategy used by grapplers to position themselves in a category to better their chances at winning gold, a belt or sword. For instance, a grappler with several years of martial arts experience might try to get into a beginners division to easily beat opponents and win first place. But, Kipp Kolar warned prospective sandbaggers that his staff will fish them out and set them straight, so as to not allow inequality among all grapplers at a tournament.

At the same time, there are challenges among grapplers especially with the older set where there are few competitors in the Men's No-Gi Executive 50+ consisting of all weights and skills. Unlike younger age divisions where weight and experience is equally grouped, the older group is subject to a different set of rules. And that caused an issue among the Executive grapplers February 14, when 5 competitors ages 40-60 plus with all weights and experience levels were initially set to compete in the same group. Kipp Kolar to the rescue resolved the issue by creating two categories for the elder grapplers with the outcome finding Al Bruhn in third place and a bronze medal around his neck after two intense matches. Kyle, Quine, Al Bruhn's head trainer, coached him through the rugged four minute matches. And, although the objective is to get an opponent to tapout, Al didn't tap out and demonstrated BJJ skills newly acquired under Quine's training leadership.

Dressed in army wrestling singlet and Dan Gable yellow wrestling shoes, Al Bruhn with a Mohawk haircut and goatee won cheers of support among spectators and his opponents. Bruhn earned five silver medals during previous NAGA tournaments. Bruhn is working with a team of trainers on a medical book project MMA & Healthy Heart For All Ages.

At the end of the day, 63 year old Al Bruhn had a lump on his forehead but only praise for 21 year old Kyle Quine, who he said knows how to teach him and progress on the mat. Bruhn, a former cardiac patient, is a guest teacher at John Read Middle School, an actor, cable TV producer/anchor and CEO of UMMA,LLC.
