(Danbury, Connecticut)...His biography reads like the Book of Job. John Murphy has been around the education ballpark in more ways than one. Seating comfortably on the USA TV Talk set at Comcast February 22, 2005, John Murphy talked about his childhood desire to become a teacher and his ambitious career that has brought him success in both private and public schools.
Included on the list of accomplishments was John Murphy's short lived tenure as principal at Danbury High School. Although sincere and articulate in his assessment of education today, John Murphy stressed the need to provide education services to all the children with special emphasis on differentiated learning that enables teachers to meet the learning style of students and their success in classrooms.
However, Mr. Murphy noted that there are teachers who don't plan to teach their classes and won't open up to new ways of helping students. Mr. Murphy talked about advisor-advisee programs, teaming as a solution to large school issues, finding the answers to schools' problems through scheduling, PLUS programs and creative programming. Mr. Murphy also talked about team planning, role of parents in today's school and reading in general.
Middle schools provide the best place for teachers to collaborate on student academic and social issues. While parents flood the elementary schools and lessen their tide of interest in the middle school, the high school is void of their involvement due to an attitude that of not wanting to do anymore PTO projects. But, Mr. Murphy cautioned parents to play a more active role with their children especially when it comes to reading. Citing clever reading programs in the elementary schools, Mr. Murphy said the same programs should take place in the home.
Mr. Murphy repeatedly emphasized the need to talk with staff before implementing a new education program including the use of consultants to assist school staff to think about ways to help students in class. Callers included children who had questions for Mr. Murphy about his education philosophy. Video clips of the broadcast will be made available here soon.
Mr. Mruphy has been in contact with Al Bruhn and informed him of his viewpoint on public education. Both Mr. Murphy and Al Bruhn are on the same "education page," and in light of their affiliation with the Danbury Public School district, they know the "inside story" about what really goes on there. Al Bruhn will share his conversations with John Murphy about DHS and more on special edition of USA TV Talk this fall. Stay tuned here for broadcast dates and times. Bruhn received a gold medal from former city school superintendent Dr. Anthony Singe for his outstanding service to students. Bruhn retired from Danbury Public Schools in 2000 to pursue a new career as a guest teacher/writer.
The program will be rebroadcast on Comcast and Charter. Check here for updates.
