(Danbury, Connecticut)...Public schools in Danbury, nearby Brewster and Mahopac New York and Ridgefield, Connecticut were talked about by veteran teacher and anchor Al Bruhn during season's live call-in premiere of USA TV Talk at Comcast on public access channel 23 October 12, 2005. Bruhn, who received a gold medal for his teaching service by former Danbury Public School superintendent Dr. Anthony L. Singe in 1993, spoke highly of his former employer as the only city school superintendent to have stayed the course and not be forced out of a job, as was the case with other school superintendents. Dr. Singe was superintendent in Danbury between 1986-1996 and is now a public school superintendent on Long Island.
Al Bruhn also praised Dr. Irene Lober, who
had a short tenure as Danbury's school superintendent, during the early 1980's. Bruhn said the city teacher union forced Dr. Lober out of office and said Danbury teachers and their school principals are under the same union, which isn't the case in other public school districts.
Bruhn also reported that former Danbury High School principal John Murphy, whom he interviewed earlier this year said that city high school teachers don't care about kids, and that central office administrators talk about one another behind their backs creating a bad education scene in Danbury. Bruhn, who retired from Danbury Public Schools in 2000, said Danbury could be one of the best public school districts in the country, but is one of the worst public school districts in the country. Bruhn also pointed out that a needs to improve school must have monitors to administrate the Connecticut Mastery Test to produce accurate scores.
And, Bruhn reported that Brewster New York Central Public School district superintendent Dr. Mark Lewis has been forced to leave his job due to an "issue" among other "issues." Bruhn also took credit for initiating an investigative report on Mahopac, New York Central Public School District alternative high school for emotionally disturbed that lead to its closing and the closing of its sister alternative high school for learning disabled with the help of The Journal News.
Bruhn praised Ridgefield High School earth science teacher Mr. Condosta, teacher of the year for 2004, as an example of excellence in education, and who had his Earth Science class fossil dig videotaped and broadcast on Comcast. In so many words, Bruhn said good teachers have good performing students and bad teachers have bad performing students. Bruhn plans to continue his investigative reporting on targeted public schools in the future. "The truth will be told" Bruhn cautioned his viewers.
