The Tradition of Thanksgiving

Justin Mazzarese

Sports Editor

As you read this, you may either be going home or coming back from a wonderful five days with the family. If youre a student, you probably ran into some old friends from high school, shared some stories and created some new ones just like ol times.

Thanksgiving is a special time of the year for many reasons. For starters, with the cooperate takeover of Christmas, which as made the holiday just as cold as the weather, Thanksgiving provides that sense of family without the hassle of emptying your pockets for a present that the person may or may not like. Also, its one of the last times you will see the beautiful foliage of the fall because the dreaded winter is ready to slam down the door. Lastly, for the little towns across America that embrace high school football its Turkey Day!

Over the years, Thanksgiving has evolved into something more than just a way to remember our nations history when the pilgrims first landed at Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts; its about football now. With the growing popularity of the sport, football has become a major part in the Thanksgiving culture. The ever waiting of Turkey Day gives the small towns of the country a taste, albeit a very small one, of the likes of Michigan versus Ohio State. The Turkey Day game is the type of game that can salvage a winless year and give hope for the following fall.

But unfortunately for some, a high majority if you will, the day is bitter-sweet because for many high school seniors who come to the realization that they can no longer play the game that they love because it will be the last time they ever set foot on the football field in the realm of competition. Some may go on to play college, but for most, it will be good-bye.

Once the sorrows or joy of the game are done, the day of football does not end, oh no, the local high school game just the warm butternut squash apple soup type appetizer- on to the main course! Bring on the eight legged turkey John Madden!

Growing stale of the Barry Sanders-less Detroit Lions, the NFL as upped the ante by adding an extra game to the usual tradition of Detroit and Dallas being the only two teams to play on Thanksgiving. This year will actually feature an interesting game has the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos square off. With the tradition of this rivalry, it fits right in with the Turkey Day theme. What adds to the game even more is that with a Kansas City can make the AFC West an interesting three team race with an over-achieving San Diego Charger team.

With this line-up, how can you go wrong? Thanksgiving comes but once a year, so enjoy it for what it is. Sure in the end, it may have been wrong to take the Native Americans land, but the initial intention was to celebrate the coming together of two different people, something that all different people should embrace.
